Why Wynwood?
“An artistic journey in the colorful district of Miami”
This area of Miami was initially sub-divided in 1917 and became the neighborhood for the working class. Throughout the years, buildings were constructed that would house bakeries, factories, warehouses and single-family homes.
In the late 70’s, Wynwood was considered low middle class with a high unemployment rate of 55% and rampant drug trafficking. In 1987, a group of artists looking for affordable rent in Miami, bought an old building that housed a well-known bakery in the 20’s. Today is now known as The Bakehouse Art Complex and considered the largest studio in Florida.
From 2003 to 2005, the founders of Wynwood Art District began transforming the old warehouses and neighborhood into art galleries and studios.
Due to the transformation of the neighborhood, Wynwood caught the attention of Tony Goldman, the force behind the revival of South Beach. Goldman and his family began to purchase chunks of the neighborhood with the dream of creating an open-air gallery of murals called “Wynwood Walls”.
Since its inception, The Wynwood Walls program has seen over 50 artists representing 16 countries and have covered 80,000 square feet of walls. The walls at Wynwood are ephemeral, constantly changing with the stamp of artists across the world.
“Art is evolutionary and so is your hair”
